Creating space for scientists and the public to come together and explore science through friendly, informal and accessible discussions

What is the Human Bookshelf?

The Human Bookshelf project was designed to create an open and respectful space members of the public to have a conversation with a difference with a scientist. The project was launched in 2023 by Dr Sophie Milbourne with the aim of allowing more in-depth discussions about research topics; an opportunity that can often be missed through other engagement/outreach events.

How does it work?

When you visit one of our Bookshelf events, you will have the opportunity to sit down with one of the books available that day (aka our scientists). Visitors will have a unique chance to ask our 'books' any burning questions they might have about the given topic, and get fascinating answers in return before their 'loan' ends. 'Readers' are able to talk with the scientists and learn about their research as well as their own personal stories and perspectives. By allowing these face-to-face sit-downs, we aim to remove barriers to sharing scientific research with the public.
