- Building a culture of translation and entrepreneurship by encouraging our researchers to think ambitiously about where their ideas could lead and how they can get there with the right partners
The Unit is well placed within the University of Cambridge to utilise the existing thriving business and enterprise ecosystem including Cambridge Enterprise, the Judge Business School and the Research Operations Office.
Our close links with Cambridge Academy of Therapeutic Sciences (CATS) and Cambridge Alliance on Medicines Safety (CAMS) provide a wealth of benefits for commercial opportunities, including access to industry experts in residence, translational champions and avenue or funding for follow on/proof of concept studies.
Spin out companies
Spin-out companies transform pioneering research into practical solutions that create real-world impact. Built on innovations developed within the Unit, these ventures bridge discovery and application to bring new technologies, therapies and services. They extend the reach of our research, create economic value and deliver solutions that benefit society.
Cambiotics
Cambiotics was founded in 2024, and in February 2026 received €4 million in investment. The company is translating pioneering discoveries from the Patil lab into innovative microbiome-based solutions for human health. Founded on research led by Dr Anna Lindell and the Patil lab, the company is developing precision probiotics designed to help reduce harmful PFAS (‘forever chemicals’) in the body, transforming fundamental toxicology research into practical intervention with global potential.
Tryptobiotics
Tryptobiotics was set up in May 2024. The start up develops novel gut-targeted therapeutics to boost the efficacy of existing anti-cancer treatments. By bringing together the latest developments in the microbiome and cancer fields, they provide oncologists with precision medicine tools and gut-targeted interventions that ensure their patients benefit fully from treatment. Founded on research led by Dr Stephan Kamrad and the Patil lab.
Jantomarna Therapeutics
Jantomarna Therapeutics was founded in 2025 to develop next-generation mRNA therapeutics for rare diseases, infections, cancer and other unmet medical needs. The company is advancing technologies that optimise mRNA design to deliver improved efficacy, safety and manufacturability, helping to accelerate the development of new therapies. Founded on research and expertise from the Willis lab and the Thaventhiran lab.
